G15 responds to the London Assembly’s Call for Evidence on Allocations in Social Housing
G15 has submitted evidence to the London Assembly’s Call for Evidence on Allocations in Social Housing, welcoming the review of how homes are allocated across the capital.
Our response highlights the urgent pressures facing London’s housing system, including a shortage of affordable and family-sized homes, long waiting lists, and inconsistencies in how allocations policies are applied between boroughs. With more than 323,000 households on social housing waiting lists in London, and overcrowding affecting nearly 15% of social rented households, a fairer and more transparent approach is essential.
G15 calls for:
- A more consistent, London-wide approach to allocations, improving fairness and transparency while respecting local priorities.
- Better data-sharing and digital systems between boroughs and housing associations to reduce delays and improve efficiency.
- Expanded mobility and downsizing options, with stronger incentives and practical support to help residents move into homes that meet their needs.
- Sustained, long-term funding for supported housing, ensuring residents with higher support needs have suitable homes and services.
As the largest group of housing associations in London, G15 members are committed to working with the Mayor of London, boroughs, and central government to make the allocations system simpler, fairer, and more effective for people in housing need.
