G15 Chair responds to the HCLG Committee’s report on social housing conditions

On 9 February, the Housing, Communities and Local Government (HCLG) Committee published a report on housing conditions in the social rented sector.

In response,  Ian McDermott, Peabody CEO and Chair of G15 said:

“We welcome the Committee’s focus on improving housing conditions. The report recognises that most social homes provide residents with warm, safe and decent places to live.

Social sector standards are higher than other rented tenures, but the system is under significant strain and cost pressure following years of rent cuts, Covid and the subsequent inflation crisis. We strongly support the new Decent Homes Standard and continue to invest in looking after residents’ homes well and providing good, reliable services despite limited rental income to fund this.

Across the G15, we’re focused on this investment whilst also striving to provide new social and affordable homes to help tackle the growing overcrowding and homelessness challenges in London.”
