G15 welcomes government announcements putting housing and homelessness in focus ahead of Budget
The government has made several social housing announcements ahead of the UK Autumn Budget on 28 October 2026. These include changes to government investment rules, funding to tackle rough sleeping this winter, and raising the shared ownership household income cap to £110.000 in London in early 2027. (ministerial statement 26/10/26).
Ian McDermott CBE, Chief Executive of Peabody and Chair of the G15, said:
“These welcome announcements put social housing at the heart of economic success and good growth in every postcode.
“We’ve consistently made the case that housing is essential economic infrastructure, so it’s good to see changes to government investment rules that explicitly recognise the wider benefits of housing alongside other place-based funding.
“This is an important shift that could help unlock growth and support better outcomes in local areas. Good housing helps people access work, essential services and opportunities, and supports stronger communities and economic growth.
“Bringing forward additional investment in social and affordable homes, alongside more support to tackle rough sleeping, is also hugely welcome. This government focus will help meet urgent housing need while supporting the longer-term investment needed to provide secure, affordable homes.
“The increase in the shared ownership income threshold to £110,000 in London is also positive. It’s a change we’ve long called for and will open home ownership up to more middle-income households, including key workers who are increasingly priced out of the capital. It should also help stimulate demand, improve the viability of developments and support the delivery of more affordable homes across the country.
“Taken together, these measures recognise the central role housing plays in creating successful places and a stronger economy. We look forward to working with government, the Mayor of London and councils, and our partners to turn this progress into more homes and opportunities for people up and down the country.”
