The G15 Residents’ Group has submitted its recommendations to HM Treasury ahead of the Autumn Budget 2026, calling for social housing to be recognised as essential national infrastructure that supports economic growth, improves health and reduces pressure on public services.
The submission sets out three key priorities: building more social rent homes, investing in existing homes and residents, and strengthening resident involvement in devolved decision-making.
In its response, the Group said:
“Social housing should be recognised as an investment in economic growth rather than a cost.”
The Group highlights the importance of long-term funding to improve housing quality, tackle damp and mould, support building safety and maintain affordability for residents. It also calls for a review of housing-related welfare support and greater support for shared owners seeking to buy additional shares in their homes.
The response stresses that residents must have a meaningful role in shaping housing policy and investment decisions, ensuring public funding delivers better outcomes for homes, communities and the wider economy.
