The G15 Residents’ Group has submitted an open letter in response to the growing concern around the declining number of children in London. Drawing on the lived experience of tenants and leaseholders across the capital’s largest housing associations, the letter highlights the increasing pressure families face in staying in the city they call home.

It sets out the vital role social housing plays in sustaining diverse, stable communities — and warns that without a significant increase in genuinely affordable, family-sized homes, London risks becoming a city where only the wealthiest can raise children.

The response calls for bold, long-term action through the Social Housing and Affordable Homes Programme, including greater investment in social rent, stronger protections for affordability, and better integration of community infrastructure. Central to this is a clear message: resident voices must be embedded in shaping the future of housing.

At its heart, the letter is a call to ensure London remains a city where families can put down roots, children can thrive, and communities can flourish for generations to come.
